10 things you should know before taking the final decision:

1. Hamster needs a special place where he can sleep peacefully during the day so to feel free to make some noise during the night.
2. He needs a clean hamster cage and fresh food daily. It requires a little work and takes time that you might not have.
3. Although the hamster doesn't like to be fondled without interruption he will strike up a friendship with you only in case that you pay him a little attention every day.
4. While he is sleeping he needs absolute calm, only in this way he will reach his normal age of 2-4 years.
5. During the time when you are missing for a long period (a long journey, holiday), you need to have a sure substitute who will care about the little creature.
6. Hamsters love moving around and have to be walked daily out of their cage in a room with a closed door.
7. During the walks it is very possible the hamster to gnaw some wall-papers, carpets or clothes.
8. Hamster needs as big cage as possible so that to have the opportunity to move calmly around.
9. If you already have other animals you should think of whether you can provide the necessary safety to all of them.
10. Please before the purchase make sure that nobody of your family is allergic to these kinds of animals.

One or more hamsters?
Hamsters are loners. In their natural environment they spend most part of their life alone. They get together only during the generative period and then split again. Females live with their cubs only a few weeks. That's why the domesticated hamsters also do not need any fellows. Even it could cause a bitter struggle (especially in the dwarf hamster cages) when two unknown hamsters meet each other. From this point of view it is much more safer and easy to  keep only one hamster in a cage.

Male or female hamster?
Whether you will prefer a male or female hamster depends only on you. Some people say that male hamsters become friends with the human for a shorter period but I have another impression. Have  a look at the cubs, spend some time with them and take this one that you like most.
