Hamster's feeding
Correct feeding of the hamsters:
In the b-nature hamsters eat seeds, herbals, berries, insects.
Main rules for the nutrition are:
-animals should not be overfed when they are captive
-food must be nourishing, fresh and varied
Hamster will show you alone how much food he needs - after he finished his meal he will take the rest in his nest because his natural instinct tells him to lay in a stock. The correct nutrition prevents some diseases, index for the right feeding is the healthy appearance of your pet, his normal behavior and successful reproduction. In order to make the hamster feels good it's enough to give him the following foods: grain, fruit and vegetables, herbals and animal products.
As the hamster is fond of vegetable food his main nutrition must be a grain mixture with main components millet, wheat, oats. Seeds are added in small quantities as an additional source of fats. Except for grain mixture you should give him and fresh plants as apples, carrots, beetroot, cucumbers, cabbage and by no means any with sharp and cutting leaves, dandelion and poisonous plants. Leaves of grain can cut the cheeks of the hamsters when he decides to move them, the dandelion exudes a milk sap that could cause irritation of the internal surface of the sack.
Do not forget to give also some animal food like eggs, cream, curds, pieces of meat or fish. You can give such things 2 times per week to the pregnant and nursing females, young animals because they need more proteins. It is very important food to include fresh fruit and vegetables (carrots, cabbage) which are at the same time an essential water source. Hamsters take badly the food uniformity and it could be changed or reduce. There should always have fresh water and some juicy food, especially during the summer when the water need is bigger than in the winter and for that reason you must be careful in hot seasons. Do not give any salty food because the drinking of water will be more and the vegetables cannot meet the water deficit in the organism. Avoid giving calorific and tasty foods like nuts, seeds, gruels because they eat much more from these titbits than is needed. When taken captive they have neither competition nor enemies or winter sleep conditions and do not need to look for food. They use up little energy but eat heartily. As a result the fat hamster loses mobility and become fatter. Obesity is a misfortune of all the inhabitants of the hamster cage.
You should also pay attention at the mineral supplements. Put them in the cage and when the hamster has some lack of them in the food he will start gnawing them. Do not give any sugar supplements, they are included in the natural foods - strawberries, fruit, vegetables. They are source of vitamins too. Be careful with these from the drug stores because they can be easily overdosed and are even harmful. At the end of the winter the best food for your hamster is oats germs and other grains, green onion.
