They are of great importance for the nutrition, entering the body with food and water. Particularly needed for hamsters is calcium, phosphorus, sodium, which are essential for the structure of bones and proper metabolism in the body, affect the activity of the nervous system and participate in the metabolism. Body contains certain amounts and proportions of them which are subdivided into macro elements, microelements and ultra microelements.

Water is vital important mineral substance. It enters into the composition of cells, tissues and all organs. Animals hardly suffer thirst, the absence of water in the summer period could lead to death. Water contains many important mineral substances entering the body with it. Water regulates body temperature and metabolism.

The water quality is also of huge importance, not just the amount drunk by animals. Water should be clean and not to contain any harmful impurities. The water from the conduit is not always good and suitable for animals so you have to draw water for the watering trough in advance. The moisture in the body of the hamster comes from three sources:

- water, formed in the body in the process of metabolism;
- water contained in the food;
- drinking water;

The quantity of water used depends on the ambient temperature, the physiological condition of the animal, his age, his kind, the level of proteins, the quantity of salt in his food. It should always have clean drinking water in the watering trough.
